About Bicycle

Karl Drais rode his running machine, a wooden two wheeler without pedals, through Mannheim in 1817. Riders pushed along the ground with their feet. Some historians link it to the Year Without a Summer of 1816, when crop failures made horses costly to feed. Pedal cranks on the front wheel appeared in France in the 1860s, followed by the high wheeled penny farthing. The chain driven safety bicycle of the 1880s created the modern form.
