About Compass

The magnetic compass was first used for divination, not navigation. Chinese sailors began using it for navigation by 1111 AD. Europeans adopted it in the 12th century, enabling the Age of Exploration. The dry compass was invented in Europe around 1300. Without it, Columbus, Magellan, and Cook could not have crossed oceans.
