About Eyeglasses

The first spectacles appeared in northern Italy around 1286. In a sermon of 1306, the Dominican friar Giordano da Pisa said the art of making eyeglasses was less than twenty years old. Early convex lenses corrected farsightedness for aging scholars and monks. Concave lenses for nearsightedness came later, in the fifteenth century. Benjamin Franklin is credited with inventing bifocals.
