Laser
About Laser
Maiman built the first working laser at Hughes Research Laboratories in May 1960 using a synthetic ruby crystal and a flash lamp. It built on the maser and on theory published by Charles Townes and Arthur Schawlow. Early critics called it a solution looking for a problem. Lasers now read barcodes, carry internet traffic through optical fiber, cut steel, and correct eyesight.
