About Pasteurization
Pasteur showed that gently heating wine to around 55 degrees Celsius killed the microbes that spoiled it without ruining the taste, and he patented the process in 1865. The method was later applied to milk, sharply reducing tuberculosis, typhoid and other milk borne diseases. His work on fermentation supported germ theory and helped overturn the idea of spontaneous generation.
