About Phonograph
Edison recorded sound by pressing a vibrating stylus into tinfoil wrapped around a rotating cylinder. The first words he recorded were the nursery rhyme Mary had a little lamb. It was the first device that could both record and play back sound. Edison expected it to be used mainly for dictation and talking books rather than music. Emile Berliner later introduced the flat disc gramophone, which won the format war.
