Cai Lun improved the papermaking process using bark, hemp, rags, and fishnets. Paper existed before but his method made it practical and cheap. Replaced bamboo strips and silk for writing. Reached the Islamic world by 751 AD and Europe by the 12th century. The technology was a closely guarded Chinese secret for centuries.
