Telegraph
About Telegraph
Samuel Morse was a successful portrait painter before he turned to electrical communication. With Alfred Vail he developed a code of dots and dashes and a practical single circuit system, while Cooke and Wheatstone built a rival needle telegraph in Britain. Congress funded a line from Washington to Baltimore, and in 1844 Morse sent the message What hath God wrought. Within decades wires and undersea cables linked continents.
