Typewriter
About Typewriter
Sholes, a Milwaukee printer and newspaperman, patented a practical typewriter in 1868 with Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule. Remington agreed to manufacture it in 1873. The QWERTY layout emerged from his experiments and is often said to have kept common letter pairs apart so typebars would not jam. The machine opened office work to women on a massive scale. Mark Twain was an early buyer.
